The world premiere of Josiah Catalan's flute concerto Night of the South Winds is featured alongside Arnold Schoenberg's Transfigured Night, Nina Shekhar's Bedtime Stories, and Sleepless Nights, by Bay Area composer Marty Rokeach.

Get to know composer Josiah Catalan and the musicians of the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble at a special event at the Piedmont Center for the Arts. Josiah will share how a trip he took to the Southern Philippines opened up a new musical world and how that connects to the new concerto he wrote for flutist Stacey Pelinka and Left Coast. You’ll get to hear the preview performance of Night of the South Winds and join in the Q&A with Josiah and the musicians. This talk is free and includes a reception.

Anthony Green tackles questions of love in the dating app and pandemic age. Kurt Rohde and poet Donna Masini tell a story of friendship between two sisters as one of them faces cancer.

Everything Else is a work for “non-musical instruments” by composer Sarah Hennies which will be performed by community members alongside members of Left Coast Chamber Ensemble. Hennies’ works explore concepts of creativity, perception, alienation, ambiguity and the spectrum of identity. No musical experience required.

Excerpts from new chamber opera Tenderhooks by composer Anthony R. Green will be used to open up a discussion about the issues addressed in this work, including issues of identity, isolation, and dating in the pandemic age. The bar will be open for drinks, including a signature Tenderhooks cocktail. Composer Anthony R. Green and librettist Mark Labowskie will be part of the discussion. Please note that Tenderhooks includes sexual content.

Excerpts from new opera "4:30 Movie" provide the starting point for this family-friendly event on honoring the memory of loved ones. Composer Kurt Rohde and poet Donna Masini will be part of the discussion. 4:30 Movie explores themes of loss, love and human connection through the lens of two sisters, one of whom is dying from cancer.

Left Coast Chamber Ensemble (LCCE) kicks off its 30th anniversary concert series with Up Next!, a concert celebrating the exuberance and brilliance of young composers! This program runs the gamut of musical emotions. Sky Macklay’s new rhythmically driven and jazzy string quintet contrasts with Sarah Westwood’s reflective introspection and Carlos Simon’s quirky and humorous musing on his childhood memories. The concert finishes with Brahms’ stormy and passionate first piano quartet, which includes the brilliant Gypsy Rondo.
