Left Coast will perform the fifth and final concert in Jonathan Khuner’s Celebrating Schoenberg series. Experience Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire with an accompanying lecture given by Matilda Hofman and Jonathan Khuner. The session will be followed by time to enjoy free refreshments and engage in open discussion.

Hosted at the Maybeck-designed First Church of Christ, Scientist, Berkeley the centerpiece will be a performance of Schoenberg's early romantic work Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night), both building and music expressing an early-twentieth-century spirit of nostalgia and experimentation.

Before the performance of Verklärte Nacht in the main sanctuary, guests can drop by the beautiful intimate chapel on the north side of the building to enjoy solo performances by cellist Leighton Fong and guitarist Michael Goldberg between 2:30 and 3:30pm

Get to know composer Josiah Catalan and the musicians of the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble at a special event at the Piedmont Center for the Arts. Josiah will share how a trip he took to the Southern Philippines opened up a new musical world and how that connects to the new concerto he wrote for flutist Stacey Pelinka and Left Coast. You’ll get to hear the preview performance of Night of the South Winds and join in the Q&A with Josiah and the musicians. This talk is free and includes a reception.

Everything Else is a work for “non-musical instruments” by composer Sarah Hennies which will be performed by community members alongside members of Left Coast Chamber Ensemble. Hennies’ works explore concepts of creativity, perception, alienation, ambiguity and the spectrum of identity. No musical experience required.
Excerpts from new chamber opera Tenderhooks by composer Anthony R. Green will be used to open up a discussion about the issues addressed in this work, including issues of identity, isolation, and dating in the pandemic age. The bar will be open for drinks, including a signature Tenderhooks cocktail. Composer Anthony R. Green and librettist Mark Labowskie will be part of the discussion. Please note that Tenderhooks includes sexual content.
